Day 2 of The Great Escape
It started a little bit later for me, as I didn’t get into Brighton until just before 3pm, so first stop was Green Door Store to see indie rockers Hatcham Social, who didn’t disappoint the crowd, even managing to play through a power cut at the end of their set. Was a good way to start the first sunny day of Great Escape after yesterday’s wet and windy affair, with the sunlight shining through the Green Door and across the bouncing crowd.
It was then time to head down to the seafront to the Republic of Music, which was at capacity when we got there. Brooklynites Friends were on stage, luckily after a few minutes waiting we were let through the gates into this interesting outdoor venue where we stayed to catch indie electro act We Have Band. We couldn’t really see much of Friends as we were under the tent, but they sounded pretty cool and they sent off some chilled out vibes to the capacity crowd who’d come to see them. By the time We Have Band had come on stage, I was able to grab a much more favourable position where I could actually see the action. Their unique brand of electro-indie is definitely worth a listen and is really good live. After a quick break to catch some food, (we missed the NCZA/Lines set) we returned to the Republic of Music for Yorkshire band, Slow Club. I’ve been getting into these guys recently and always wanted to try and catch them this week at TGE. They certainly lived up to my expectations, with a brilliant set which the crowd enjoyed. I even managed to get a good position on one of the chairs at the edge of the courtyard to catch a view of the band playing.
We then headed back up into town, to the Hub, where we saw a band who I didn’t manage to catch the name of. Which is annoying, because they were awesome. So if you know who they are from the picture above, please get in touch! After that, it was time to go to the Prince Albert to catch Dubliners, Sleep Thieves and their brilliant electro pop. This 3-piece are clearly very talented, using a plethora of different electronic instruments, as well as guitars. I certainly have acquired a slight crush on vocalist, Sorcha. This would be the first of two gigs I saw them play at The Great Escape.
Psychosocial was the next destination, to see Catalan Sounds’ Me and The Bees, who were very excitable and happy to be in Brighton, even changing some of their lyrics to fit in with their location. They managed to squeeze an extra few songs out of the guys running the event, which pleased the crowd as they got to hear more upbeat indie-pop. NZ’s Princess Chelsea was up next, playing her interesting brand of chamber pop, but we couldn’t stay for too long as Haim were playing downstairs in the basement about halfway through the set. These 3 sisters and a drummer had been pretty hyped, so expectations were high. However, there were no disappointments to be found here. One of the highlights of the weekend was their banter-laden set in a boiling hot basement, with the crowd loving the ‘part pristine folk-pop, R&B beats and clipped instrumentation’ as the programme described. They proclaimed their love for England, Brighton and Fish & Chips, as Brighton proclaimed their love for Haim. Their set ended with all three girls having a drum each and rocking out which just set the crowd into a rapturous applause.
Final destination of the Day was The Warren, tucked away behind a car park and around a corner, this slightly difficult to find venue was hosting Grecian’s Keep Shelly in Athens. Very good dark electro, with excellent vocals filling the room. These large soundscapes-cum-dance tunes brought a chilled out ending to proceedings on Day 2.
Day 3 to follow…
